Towing of entire icebergs in the UAE may begin as early as 2019

A mountain of pure ice next to the hot desert Sands – more than one million tourists will come to the UAE for such an attraction…

This will help partially compensate for the cost of transporting the iceberg to the Persian Gulf. And if Abdullah alshehi, a millionaire and initiator of the venture, succeeds in the third part of the plan, it will snow in the sultry region of the planet for the first time in the history of mankind. The most real, cold and beautiful. But still in the first place is a different task – to give water to the suffering countries.

The UAE state will dry up and die of thirst in a maximum of 25 years. There is a lot of oil here, but there are no water sources at all, the annual precipitation rate is less than 100 mm.and despite the fact that the region is among the ten driest on the planet, water consumption is growing twice as fast as the average in the world. It is logical that the local sheikhs are ready to use the word “absolutely” to solve the problem of providing the UAE with water.

The most interesting thing is that dragging these huge icebergs from far Antarctica is more cost-effective than trying to get fresh water in any other way. The difference between the same seawater desalination technology is almost an order of magnitude higher in money, plus desalination has a number of side effects that are extremely harmful to the environment. And huge energy costs-the Emirates are rich, but they try to spend money skillfully. It is not for nothing that at the end of the last century they began to get off the “oil needle” and turned the same Dubai into a world trade, business and tourist center?

Abdullah alshehi enthusiastically talks about the plans – everything has already been calculated to the smallest detail. To get the icebergs will have heard of the island, 1,000 km from the mainland of Antarctica. The technology has not yet been tested, but in theory everything is simple. With the help of satellites, a piece of ice up to 2 km in diameter is selected, a cable with a strong metal network is wound around it, clings to the ocean tug and forward to the warm shores. Although the volume and weight of the iceberg is enormous, it is still the same water that floats well in the water, and the power of a modern ship is quite enough for transportation.

To get the icebergs will have heard of the island, 1,000 km from the mainland of Antarctica
And immediately answer your question: no, the iceberg will not melt, even when it passes 8000 km to the goal and will be in much warmer water. First, no one has canceled the laws of physics and as long as the ice is in the form of a solid array, it will be very difficult to melt it. You need to break up. Secondly, most of the iceberg is hidden under water, thus already protected from the hot desert air. Third, the light surface reflects sunlight. Fourthly, the most valuable cargo will be towed at the maximum available speed, and all tankers with oil will have to give way. As a result, the losses will not exceed 30%, that is, approximately 30-40 million tons of fresh water will reach the UAE.

This water is one of the cleanest in the world, because the ice was formed thousands of years ago, when no one smoked the sky and waste was not poured into the sea. It is planned to build docks-foundries, where the iceberg will be slowly cut into pieces and melted, thus providing 10 million people with drinking water for at least six months. The cost of one delivery with processing is estimated at a ridiculous amount for the UAE, some $100-150 million. And this is really much more profitable than even carrying the water itself from somewhere, plus the ice in Antarctica will last for hundreds of years, even if the entire middle East begins to drag icebergs from there on a permanent basis.

But the most interesting thing in another – the first, trial towing of the iceberg is going to be arranged in 2019, the maximum next year. At the same time, the object will first be taken nearby, to Perth, Australia, or Cape town, South Africa. Because the UAE wants to make sure that the project is free of pitfalls, and you can start building the host infrastructure. And it threatens to become the site for the most grandiose weather experiment in history.

The fact is that instead of passively melting the ice, alshehi wants to use the iceberg as a source of cold. There are already projects on how to drive air through it, so that the output is saturated with moisture and a cold atmosphere. The air masses will be directed to the cities, where condensation will occur and the rain will fall. And if there is enough cold, then it will snow – the UAE will get a unique attraction, a real magnet for tourists!
