“Throw an eagle on a mobile phone”, or how to help Siberian ornithologists

To study the migration of steppe birds, scientists use GPS devices that send text messages…

Until recently, there were no difficulties with this, and this year one of the birds went to Iran. Since sending SMS from there is not cheap, the entire budget for the year was spent on research in October. In order to continue tracking, we initiated the campaign “Throw an eagle on a mobile phone”.

Scientists have long studied the movements of steppe eagles, because they are red-book. Thanks to the GPS devices that each bird of prey has, data with their coordinates comes every day. The goal of scientists is to identify the main migration routes in order to prevent threats to birds (power lines, abandoned poisons, people with guns). Knowing the way to move, the route can be made as safe as possible.

In the summer, steppe eagles usually live in Russia or Kazakhstan, wait out the cold in Saudi Arabia, India, and rarely go to Iran or Afghanistan.

So it happened now: birds of prey set off across Kazakhstan, choosing a route away from mobile towers. A few actually left the area budget for free. So, the eagle of Mines flew at all Kazakh towers, having got to Iran, from where 1 sms is sent for 49 rubles. And as soon as communication with it was restored, its GPS began to transmit data for the entire flight. Expenses amounted to 7,000 rubles per day. You can’t change the settings, they are in the device’s memory.

That is, the money allocated for communication services for a year ended a little more than 9 months later. The coordinates of the movement come to scientists every hour of the day. It is unwise to send data less often: if a bird is in trouble, ornithologists will find out about it too late. At the same time, “subscribers” risk getting into the block, which will lead to the loss of all information, and they still have to fly before the end of the year.
“Throw the eagle on the mobile phone»
This action was initiated to make up for the lack of funds that were prematurely spent. By the end of October (data for 25.10.2019) collected almost 100 thousand rubles. Soon the company “MegaFon” said that the debt was repaid and even promised to create a special tariff for such cases.
Expensive wintering
Some birds are “behaving” properly, the researchers note. For example, Aina, before flying to Egypt, flew to Russia, where a million SMS messages were sent with her movements in Kazakhstan in the summer for 2 rubles. from Here, the eagle went to winter (now she is in Sudan). Two other predators went to Pakistan (from there messages are sent 2 times cheaper).

In General, the routes of 13 birds are tracked. In addition to Mines, the budget was hit and the coordinates of 3 other eagles were sent. Two of them spent the winter in the expensive zone last year, and now they are planning to repeat everything. One was in Iran, where he transferred part of his summer movements.

13 bird routes are tracked
So far, there are 3 eagles in the” expensive “zones, 5 more in the cheaper regions, and 1 more in the” cheap ” zone (he did not leave the Russian Federation for a long time, then flew to Kazakhstan).

On average, 300 thousand rubles are spent on birds over the winter, and a little less than 100 thousand for the summer. scientists expect that another 135 thousand rubles will be spent by the end of 2019.
